On 15 April, I attended a conference at Massey College entitled Liberal Democracy in the Rearview Mirror? I made a short presentation on what I called the ‘theological origin of liberalism’, and my basic point was that liberalism borrows its main assumptions from Western Christianity. It is therefore a problem (a) if those Christian assumptions cease to be taken for granted and (b) if liberalism is unable to justify its own claims. Liberalism and its discontents are rarely framed in theological terms, but it seems to me that such framing is essential if we are to understand and resolve the troubles before us.
